Alvena sits about 60 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, in the Rural Municipality of Fish Creek No. 402. The first people to settle along the nearby South Saskatchewan River were Métis families. Many of them were caught up in the Battle of Fish Creek on April 24, 1885, which was fought in Tourond's Coulee, a few miles west of where Alvena would later stand.
